QPS Fix Generator MK 6 - not sold anymore

General Description

The QPS Fix Generator MK 6 is a hardware device manufactured by QPS for use with the Qinsy software. It is able to receive and/or send two closure (CLS) or TTL pulses.
Outgoing closure or TTL pulses can be used to activate external devices, whereas incoming closure or TTL pulses can be used for PPS (Pulse-Per-Second) support and fixmark activation from other navigation systems.

Device Description

Power supplyThe device automatically detects the power supply 100 and 240 V AC 50-60 Hz. A 630 mA fuse is used at the power entry.
Input signals

The MK6 supports both positive and negative input signals. This needs to be set using the 'QPS Trigger Config Utility'. LEDs on the front panel indicate whether the input signal is set to positive = RED or negative = GREEN.

Signal typeThe 'Config Utility' is used to switch between TTL and CLS for both input and output.
Connectors

The interface connectors are located at the rear panel of the MK6 . For incoming pulses 2 BNC connectors are present. (FIX IN 1 and FIX IN 2) as well as RS232 connectors to transfer the pulse to QINSy. This way, TTL and CLS can be combined.
The FIX OUT has an RS232 port for the input signal from Qinsy and two BNC outputs. The FIX OUT pulse length for TTL is set to 300 milliseconds (fixed). For a Closure this is adjustable in 8 steps between 300 and 700 milliseconds. Use the Config Utility for these settings.

To avoid interference, both the FIX IN connectors are provided with an input signal block of 0.5 second after receiving a pulse. The output signals are only available for positive signals. All the input and output connectors are safeguarded conforming to EMC and EMI electronic directions.

The Trigger Config Utility (TriggerConfig.exe) is located in the root directory of Qinsy and can be added to the Qinsy Console by right-clicking in the lower panel and selecting Add Program.

Always leave the cooling slots on top and bottom of the device open.

Event Mode

Under most circumstances "Distance Seismic" will be the appropriate Event Mode setting in the Session Setup interface.
If you are using compressed airguns, you will probably want to use "Distance Preload" which is more complicated.
But basically it provides the interaction between the gun controller and fix generator to monitor pressure at the gun string so the guns are at the correct PSI at the time of the shot.

See explanation below.

When combining a Qinsy 'Preload Fix Out' with a 'Fix In' from a gun controller the cable should be split so that it can be connected to two serial ports. The following diagram details the necessary wiring.
The reason for the two serial ports is the fact that the 'Preload Fix Out' is generated by the driver 'DrvOutFix.exe' and the 'Fix Fix In' is detected by the core process 'FixGenerator.exe'.
Both 'DrvOutFix.exe' and 'FixGenerator.exe' use the same COM port connected to Qinsy.
