QPS Fix Generator MK 3 - not sold anymore
General Description
The QPS Fix Generator MK 3 is a hardware extension manufactured by QPS to be used with the Qinsy software. It has the possibility to receive and/or send two closure (CLS) or TTL pulses.
Outgoing closure or TTL pulses can be used to activate external devices, whereas incoming closure or TTL pulses can be used for PPS (Pulse-Per-Second) support and fixmark activation from other navigation systems.
Device Description
The QPS Fix Generator device supports 2 fix out ports (FIX OUT) and 2 fix in ports (FIX IN). All ports can be configured to send (receive) closure or TTL pulses. The selection can be made with the switches on the front panel of the fix box. The switch in the left position (TTL) sets the particular port to TTL mode, right (CLS) sets it to closure mode. All fix ports are BNC connectors on the rear panel of the fix device. The length of the fix out pulses can be adjusted with the 2 pot meters next to these BNC connectors. The length of the pulses can be set between 0.1 second (100 milliseconds) and about 2 seconds (2000 milliseconds). The time that the fix LED is on corresponds with the length of the pulse.
Make sure the core of the power supply cable has a positive polarity (12V).

Cable Diagram
If Fix Out is used the fix device needs to be powered by a 12 Volts DC adapter (9 Volts will actually be enough).
The serial connection cable between the QPS fix device and the computer's COM port should be wired as follows:
DB-9M | Fix Device | DB-9F | COM port on pc | DB-25F | COM port on pc | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pin 3 | FIX out | — | Pin 3 | FIX out | Pin 2 | FIX out |
Pin 5 | SG | — | Pin 5 | SG | Pin 7 | SG |
If Fix In is used the fix device needs to be powered via the DB9 connector.
In this case the connection between the fix device and the computer's COM port should be wired as follows:
DB-9M | Fix Device | DB-9F | COM port on pc | DB-25F | COM port on pc | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Pin 2 | FIX in | — | Pin 2 | FIX in | Pin 3 | FIX in |
Pin 4 | 5V in | — | Pin 4 | 5V out | Pin 20 | 5V out |
Pin 5 | SG | — | Pin 5 | SG | Pin 7 | SG |
For PPS, connect the PPS Pulse from the GPS receiver to the BNC connector "FIX IN 1".
Connect the serial cable between the DB9 serial connector "IN-1" (NOT "OUT") on the fix device and the COM port on the computer.
If PPS is connected to the BNC connector "FIX IN 2", connect the serial cable to the DB9 serial connector "IN-2".
